A Moment of History and Nature at Katsurahama: Meet Ryoma and the Pacific Ocean
Katsurahama Beach in Kochi is one of the region’s most iconic sightseeing spots, known for its grand statue of Sakamoto Ryoma and the stunning horizon stretching endlessly into the Pacific Ocean.
It’s also been selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Beaches,” and its scenic beauty is simply breathtaking
I visited in May 2023, right as the fresh greenery was at its peak. The vivid contrast between the blue ocean and the lush green trees was incredibly refreshing.
Say Hello to Ryoma First
No visit to Katsurahama is complete without meeting this guy!
The statue of Sakamoto Ryoma is practically the symbol of Kochi tourism, and its size is surprisingly massive.
With his back facing the land and eyes fixed on the Pacific, Ryoma seems to be silently speaking to the future.
Near the statue, you’ll find signs about Katsurahama Park and photo-op spots that really get you into sightseeing mode
A Relaxing Stroll Along the Shoreline
The real charm of Katsurahama lies in its gorgeous coastline.
You can walk right down to the water’s edge and enjoy the soothing sound of the waves at your feet.
The sand is a bit dark and very fine, and it looks like it’d feel amazing to walk barefoot.
Gazing out over the ocean and letting your thoughts drift is the ultimate refreshment.
Don’t Miss the Shrine and Souvenir Spots
Katsurahama is also home to Watatsumi Shrine, which has long been loved as a place to pray for safety at sea.
Built atop a cliff, the shrine offers spectacular ocean views
You’ll also find souvenir shops and stalls near the entrance of the park.
Grab some local specialties like imo-kenpi (sweet potato sticks) or katsuo no tataki (seared bonito) to take home with you!
Make Time for Katsurahama Aquarium on Your Way Out
Right beside the beach is the charming retro Katsurahama Aquarium.
It’s compact but full of fun, with sea turtles, penguins, and more! It’s a great stop, especially if you’re traveling with kids
Conclusion: A Seaside Escape Packed with Kochi’s Charm
Katsurahama offers the perfect mix of nature, history, and romantic nostalgia.
It’s an absolute must-visit if you’re heading to Kochi!
Take a moment to feel the sea breeze on your face and imagine the era when Sakamoto Ryoma walked this land
