Shijimi Clam Ramen at Wakayama – A Local Favorite by Lake Jūsan

While driving near the Jūsan Lake Bridge, we stopped by a well-known ramen spot: Shijimi Ramen Wakayama Jūsan Lake Main Branch.
It’s a spacious eatery with both tatami and table seating. We couldn’t help but laugh at the name—“Wakayama” in Aomori? That contrast alone made us curious enough to drop in.

Apparently, it’s a pretty famous place! We just stopped in on a whim, drawn in by the name alone, so we had zero expectations—pleasant surprise!

We ordered the “Large Shijimi Clam Ramen”, featuring extra-big freshwater clams. Maybe it’s a bit of self-care after drinking too much the night before? 😅
The clams were huge—almost like asari—and tender enough to enjoy as a topping.
The broth was super light and packed with umami, making it easy to slurp down. Actually… maybe too easy! I could’ve eaten another bowl.
By the way, they also run a small guesthouse next to the restaurant.
Lake Jūsan: Japan’s Premier Shijimi Clam Region
Lake Jūsan is one of Japan’s top producers of shijimi clams, thanks to its unique status as a brackish lake.
The Yamato shijimi clams grown here are especially flavorful, and the ramen made with them is a beloved local specialty.
Wakayama is one of the area’s most iconic ramen shops, offering both dining and accommodation, so you can stay overnight and savor more clam-based dishes.
The shop’s name is said to be inspired by the founder’s love of Wakayama-style ramen, giving this northern eatery a surprising Kansai twist.
