Healing Waterfalls & Wasabi Fields: A Spiritual Getaway to Joren Falls in Amagi
Joren Falls — Sacred Site of Sayuri Ishikawa & a Burst of Negative Ions ♡

“…Water rising, swaying, falling from your shoulder, the mountain burns, no matter what happens, I want to cross the fire with you—Amagi-goe…”
Cue Sayuri Ishikawa's iconic enka ballad and you know exactly where I am—at the mystical Joren Falls in Izu!

After visiting the Tsugaru Strait in Aomori (yes, the one from Tsugaru Kaikyo Fuyugeshiki), this makes it my second Sayuri pilgrimage stop! Wonder how many more are out there? 🤔

Even though Joren Falls is nestled deep in the mountains, it’s surprisingly lively! The parking lot is surrounded by cheerful souvenir shops that smell like wasabi and nostalgia.

As you walk down toward the falls, you’ll find a serene wasabi farm along the stream. This traditional method of cultivating Shizuoka water wasabi has even been recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System!

Honestly, the wasabi steals the spotlight here. It’s got main character energy in this tourist spot 😂

Then comes the main event—Joren Falls! The thundering water cascades down in white mist, landing into an emerald-green basin. So powerful, so fresh! You'll be showered in misty droplets of pure minus ions.

🎶“I want to cross Amagi with you…”
As a kid, I thought this was just a sweet couple’s trip. But reading the lyrics as an adult, turns out it's… an affair?! 😱 Totally didn’t catch that back then!
Still, please don’t cross Amagi in the forbidden way, folks 😂 No to cheating, always.

Right next to the falls is Amagi International Trout Fishing Grounds (sounds fancy and slightly Chinese in name lol). It’s stocked with rainbow trout and amago, aka the Queen of Clear Streams. Great for families—but no one seemed to be catching anything, so maybe it’s secretly pro-level difficulty?

With wasabi fields on one side and a quiet river on the other, this place is refreshingly peaceful. Super cool even in midsummer. Honestly, I could just sit here all day, watching wasabi leaves dance and listening to the river. Total Ghibli vibes with Summer of Kikujiro playing in my head 🎐

Back at the parking lot, the blazing summer heat slaps you into reality. Where did that cool breeze go?! Time to soothe myself with a wasabi ice cream before driving off 🍦
